Admission Test for Dental Hygiene (ATDH) Practice

240 questions. Four hours and fifty minutes. Six sections. The ATDH is a long day, and it's worth knowing exactly how that time and those questions are actually distributed before you walk in.

Perceptual Ability is the largest single section by item count, 60 questions, a full quarter of the entire exam, and it's also the section most candidates coming from a biology or chemistry background have the least natural preparation for. It's a spatial reasoning section, not a knowledge section, so no amount of studying biology textbooks helps you here. It rewards practice with the specific question types, not subject matter review.

There's no official passing score. Scores run 200 to 500 in 10-point increments, and each dental hygiene program sets its own threshold for what it considers competitive, which means "passing" is really about hitting whatever bar your specific target programs expect, not a universal cutoff.

Retesting has real limits. One attempt per administration window, the ATDH only runs during fixed windows rather than on demand. After three attempts, you need the ADA's written permission to test again, and from that point forward you're capped at once per 12 months. That's a meaningful constraint if your first attempt doesn't go the way you hoped, treat your early attempts with real preparation rather than treating the exam as low-stakes practice.

Administration runs through Prometric testing centers with biometric security. Fees run $140 for administration and official score reporting to your selected programs, plus $50 for additional score report requests made after your initial application.

Given how heavily Perceptual Ability weighs in the raw item count, and how different a skill it is from the other five sections, splitting prep time evenly across all six sections shortchanges the one that's both the largest and the least like anything you've studied in a science class.
